Building a second brain from video, not just articles
Second-brain systems are built around text you can highlight and quote. Video gives you none of that — no selectable passage, no clean excerpt, just a timestamp. The fix is to shift the unit of capture from the highlight to the claim: one retrievable statement per idea, tied back to its timestamp.
Why do second-brain systems break on video?
Because almost every one of them was designed around highlighting, and video has nothing to highlight.
The text workflow is well worn: read, highlight a passage, sync the highlight, review it later. The highlight is doing enormous work — it is the unit of capture, it carries its own context, and it is quotable verbatim. Video hands you none of that. The best you get is a timestamp, which is a pointer, not content. Coming back to "1:42:10" a month later tells you nothing; you have to rewatch to find out what you meant.
The collector's fallacy
There is a well-named trap here: the collector's fallacy — the sense that having saved something is the same as having learned it. Saving produces an immediate feeling of progress and zero actual retention, which makes it one of the most reliably addictive behaviours in personal knowledge management.
Video makes it worse. A saved article carries a small implicit debt you can feel: you know you have not read it. A saved video feels already consumed if you watched it, so it does not even register as outstanding — it registers as done. It is not done. Nothing has been retrieved.
Change the unit of capture
The fix is not a better folder structure. It is to stop capturing pointers and start capturing claims.

This is the same instinct behind a Zettelkasten — Niklas Luhmann's system worked because each note was a self-contained thought written in his own words, not a reference to someone else's page. The wording is the point: a note you can only understand with the source open is not a note, it is a bookmark.
What is actually worth keeping?
Far less than you save. A useful filter, applied at the moment you finish something:
- Would I bring this up in a conversation? If not, it is entertainment, and entertainment does not need a review schedule.
- Can I state it as a claim? If the only thing you can write is a topic, you did not take an idea from it.
- Does it change anything? An idea that confirms everything you already thought is pleasant and inert.
Most long-form video fails all three, and that is fine. The goal is not to process everything you watch — it is to notice the two or three things a month that are worth actually owning.
Why connections matter more than folders
A folder answers "where did I put it". That is a retrieval problem you rarely have, because search already solves it. The problem you actually have is not knowing that the thing you saved eight months ago is relevant to what you are thinking about now.
That is a connection problem, and it is why graph-shaped systems keep reappearing. An idea linked to three others has three routes back to it, and is far more likely to surface unprompted. Folders give you one route, and only if you remember the folder.
The missing half of every system
Capture, organise, connect — most tools cover these three well. The fourth step is the one almost nothing does: bring it back on its own.
Without that, a second brain is a well-organised archive that depends on you remembering to consult it, which is precisely the faculty it exists to compensate for. A system that requires good memory to be useful has an obvious circularity problem.

- Can I not just use Notion or Obsidian for this?
- You can, and for text they work well. The gap is video: you will still need something to turn a three-hour recording into retrievable claims, and something to schedule the reviews. Both tools export cleanly, so using one as the permanent store is entirely reasonable.
- How is this different from a read-it-later app?
- A read-it-later app is a capture system. It is very good at getting things in and has no opinion about whether anything comes back out. That is the half that determines whether you remember any of it.
- Do I need a knowledge graph, or is that overkill?
- It is useful in proportion to how long you have been saving. In the first month a list is fine. After a year, the value is entirely in surfacing the connection you would never have gone looking for.
- What about podcasts and audiobooks?
- Same problem, slightly worse — audio has no visual anchor at all. The same shift applies: capture the claim, keep the timestamp attached to it.
